SAFETY AND SECURITY

Campus Security and Safety Policy
In order to provide a safe instructional environment, Edison School has a closed campus policy.  This means that every person not enrolled in our school or not an employee of GUSD MUST register in the Front Office before going to any part of the school grounds for any reason.

Parents, volunteers, and other visitors, once registered, will be given a badge to wear that should be visible to everyone.  Anyone without a badge will be directed immediately to the Office and or escorted off the campus.

Emergency Preparedness
The goal of the Edison Emergency Preparedness Plan is the protection of students and employees should a major emergency situation occur in the area.  The plan identifies members of the school’s emergency teams and outlines responsibilities.  The plan is updated and revised annually.

In the event of an actual emergency (earthquake, fire, police activity), parents are to follow these procedures:
1. Tune in to radio station KIEV, AM 870 for emergency information.
2. When phones are operating, DO NOT call the school.  Our phone lines must be used for emergency purposes.  GUSD will put on its 24-hour Emergency “HOT” line.  The number is (818) 241-3111.
3. Be assured that school personnel will remain with your child until someone comes for him/her.  State Education Code requires that all school employees must remain on duty until they are notified that they may leave.
4. Your child will only be released to those adults you designated on the emergency card.  Please make sure your child’s emergency card is kept current at all times.
5. The school will be locked down.  Parents and adults picking up students will be asked to come to the Kenilworth gate.  You will sign out your child and they will be brought to you at the gate.  Parents and adults will not be allowed onto the school campus.

Classes will participate in a series of earthquake/fire/lock-down drills during the school year.  Teachers may receive a simulated disaster scene for their class to role-play.  Parents may be asked to participate in the role-play.  Full-scale disaster drills will occur two times during the school year.  If you would like to participate in these drills, please contact the school office.

If you are on campus during an earthquake/fire/lock-down drill it is important that you also follow the procedures:

In the case of an earthquake (or earthquake drill):
You will hear an announcement on the intercom from the school office to “duck and cover.”  Students should drop under their desks or tables, shield their eyes and hold onto a table leg if possible.  All adults should also drop and cover.  They must remain in this position until the quake has subsided or until an all clear command is given by the office.  The loudspeaker may be damaged, so the teacher must determine when it is safe to evacuate the classroom.  Everyone meets on the grass field in designated lines.

In the case of a fire (or fire drill):
You will hear a signal (repeating bells with flashing lights) initiated by the office.  Students, teachers, visitors and any staff/personnel must evacuate the buildings quickly and quietly.  Everyone meets on the upper playground in designated lines.

In the case of a need to lock down the campus (or a shelter in place drill):
Students are directed to go immediately to the closest classroom or open room.  Teachers will lock their doors and keep all students inside until an all clear signal is given.  Each classroom will be contacted to determine the location of all students and staff.  If students must be dismissed during  a lock-down procedure, parents or adults designated on the student’s emergency card, will go to the office to show proper identification, sing the student out and the student will be brought to the office.  No parents or non-school personnel will be allowed on campus during a lock-down.  Students will only be dismissed when given direction to do so be the administrators who will be working closely with the local police, fire and other city officials in order to secure student safety.

School Safety
We are deeply committed to maintaining a school that is safe and secure for your children. Considerable time, expertise, and funds have gone into strengthening safety and security measures on this campus and throughout the school district. Keeping our school safe is everyone’s responsibility. You are also an important part of our safety and security plan. Let’s continue to work together.

Bicycles/Skateboards/Scooters/Rollerblades
With parent permission, students in Grades 3-6 may only ride a bicycle to school. The student rides at his/her own risk. State law mandates that bike riders must wear a bicycle helmet. We highly encourage parents to familiarize their child with bicycle safety rules/laws. We also encourage parents to plan the safest route to and from school in order to avoid potential hazards. Each bike must be secured with a lock to the bicycle rack located inside the school campus near the Kenilworth gate. Students are to walk their bicycles at all times when they are on the school grounds.

Students may not bring skateboards, scooters and/or rollerblades to school, or ride them at any time on campus.

Rainy Day & Scorcher Day Procedures
Rainy Days:
  • On rainy days, students in grades 1-6 may wait inside the gymnasium until 8:00 AM (9:00 AM on Fridays). If it is raining very hard the teachers will pick them up from the gymnasium. Kindergarten students should be dropped off in the school office. They will be taken over to the classrooms and supervised until school begins. Recess will be held inside the classrooms. Lunch will either be held in the gymnasium or the students' classrooms.
  • Students are dismissed from the Kenilworth gate on rainy days but are kept under the shelters in the picnic area. Parents are asked to stay back from this area on rainy days so that we can supervise all students in this area.
Scorcher Days: When the temperature on the playground gets above 90 degrees, the following procedures will be enforced.
  • No playground balls or equipment is to be used on the playground.
  • No running.

Traffic & Parking

School traffic is a safety problem for our students and we need your help to resolve it.  In the past, many parents would stop their cars across the street from the school and have their children cross through traffic.  Some parents double park, block driveways, and even park in neighbor’s driveways to wait for their children, sometimes leaving their cars unattended.  All these situations are not only illegal but also create a safety hazard for our students.

The Glendale Traffic Safety Committee has reviewed these infractions and understands our concerns.  They made some valuable recommendations about Edison’s traffic situation.  The following Edison Traffic Safety Plan was created with input from the Glendale City Planners, the Glendale Police Department and GUSD Student Services Department.  All parents and students are expected to follow the plan:

Dropping Off or Picking Up Students:

1. All students enter and exit the school through the Kenilworth gate.
2. A special drop-off and pick-up lane is designated along Kenilworth.  There will be NO PARKING in this area from 7:00 – 9:00 am and from 2:00 – 3:30 pm on school days.  A coned lane will be put out in the morning to designate where parents who are driving cars are allowed to drop off or pick up their children.
3. Please have your children ready to get out of the car when dropping off to avoid delays.
4. An Edison staff member will be present to supervise students as they walk into the school.  There is no need for you to wait to watch them walk through the school gate.
5. Parents picking up children in the coned area may NOT get out of their cars.  This is considered parking in a NO PARKING lane and is illegal.
6. Parents on the opposite side of the street may not drop-off or pick up children unless their car is legally parked and they cross the street at the corners.
7. Students needing to cross the street must walk to the corners even if an adult accompanies them.
8. Students who are picked up by car must wait inside the fence for their parents to pick them up.  There will be adult supervision to ensure safety.  Parents must drive into the coned area, pick up their children, and then exit.  Cars will not be allowed to park and wait.
9. Please know the name of your child’s teacher.  It helps our staff call for your child when you drive up in the pick up lane.  Our staff will also be able to tell you if the class has not yet arrived at the gate so that you can drive around the block.
10. If your child is not in the waiting area—YOU MAY NOT wait for them.  You must drive around the block and try again.
11. Do not come early to wait for your children.  Teachers dismiss at 2:00pm (Grades 1-3) and 2:20 pm (Grades 4-6).  They must walk to the Kenilworth gate.  This takes some time.  Parents should come no earlier than 2:10 pm (Grades 1-3) or 2:30 pm (Grades 4-6).
12. Children waiting for older siblings need to stay seated on the benches.
13. Children are NOT to be running or playing chase, tag or ball in this area after school.
14. DO NOT double park, park in neighbor’s driveways or perform U-turns around any of the streets near Edison School during drop-off or pick-up times.

Students who WALK Home:
• Students who are walking to school or home alone or with their parents (or other adult) must enter and exit from the Kenilworth gate.

The traffic plan is implemented with the support of the Glendale Police Department.  They frequently supervise the drop-off and pick-up of students to ensure that all parents and adults are following the traffic laws.  Traffic tickets will be given to anyone not following the law.  This plan is in place to keep our students safe.  While it may take a few trips around the block to pick up your child- we are sure you agree that the safety of the children come first.
